The Tekapo Springs winter snow tube opened on Saturday 9 June, more than a month earlier than last year.
Managing Director Karl Burtscher said both snow tubing and ice skating will be in full swing and the winter promises to be one of the best for winter sports.
“Just a few days ago we were taking down the country’s first summer tube facility and now we are ready for the winter park fun to start. We’ve been grooming the 150 metre long slope and building up the straights, banked corners, parabolic curves and bumps to create high-adrenalin rides for every ability level.”
Tekapo Springs introduced a Magic Carpet conveyor lift last season and it was an immediate hit, returning tube riders to the top of the slope in less than a minute.
The snow tubes have reinforced bases and riders quickly learn how to turn and drive them down the slope riding on gravity with some help from the slippery snow.
“There is little friction between the tube and snowy slope so combined with gravity, it is easy to get considerable speed up, which makes it very exciting,” Mr Burtscher said. “It can be enjoyed by novices but many riders quickly gain skills to get more spins and speed from the course.”
“The cold snap may have disrupted airlines, buses and road access for drivers, but it has meant we’ve got an early start to the winter season. Our ice rink has been open since April and the popular ice discos operate every Friday and Saturday nights, 8 – 10 pm, with great music and prizes.”
Tekapo Springs offers snow tubing, ice skating, hot pools, day spa and a licensed bar and café.
