So much snow! That’s been the story for most of the South Island this week and parts of the North Island too. Lake Tekapo got about 30cm over Sunday, Monday and Tuesday giving the town a very wintery feel. Now that the cloud has lifted and the sky is blue for as far as the eye can see, the reality of the views from Alpine Springs and Lake Tekapo are simply stunning.
Snow started falling around 1pm on Sunday afternoon. By nightfall there was a patchy covering on the ground. Monday morning came around to reveal the expected… more snow had fallen over night. The roads were starting to become slightly dangerous and roads over Burkes and Lindis Passes where both closed. Over Monday the snow continued to fall on and off throughout the day, but was not until Tuesday the majority of the Snow fell, with consistent snowfall throughout the day. Come Tuesday night however the weather had started to lift and the end of this polar blast was in sight.
Over Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday Alpine Springs was a popular place to be for locals and visitors to Tekapo alike. The Hot Pools were just magnificent as snow settled all around; steam billowed from the Hot Pools into the fresh wintery air. The novelty of soaking in a Hot Pool surrounded by masses of snow was lost on no one visiting Alpine Springs.
The Snow Tubing Park got some additional snow over the start of the week as Alpine Springs Staff worked through the night making snow to compliment the natural snowfall. This will ensure some great Snow Tubing conditions for weeks to come! The massive amount of snow on the park saw that it was not open on Monday while it was being groomed.
Ice-skating was very popular with children who had too much energy to simply relax in the Hot Pools. Alpine Springs Staff worked tirelessly throughout the week to ensure that the Ice Rink remained open. Well-done team!
Fancy a massage? It seemed as though half of Tekapo did this week, the team at the Day Spa have been kept busy from people snowed in and looking for a bit of pampering. What a great way to spend a snow day! Hot Pools, Massage, Sauna/Steam Room, and a nice hot coffee in the Cafe… Yes please!
Now that the sky has cleared and the roads are all open and the local ski fields are ready to go it’s a great weekend to get out and experience the Mackenzie at it’s finest. Surrounding ski fields got on average 80cm of snow over the week setting them up to a strong finish for the season. The Day Spa is offering an August Special for skiers that includes a 45 minute lower body massage for only $79.00! Call 0800 2 535 8283 to book yours now!
