The history of Mother’s day dates back to the times of the ancient Greeks who held festivities to honour the Mother of the Gods, Rhea.

Early Christians in England celebrated a Mother’s festival on the 4th Sunday of Lent, honouring Mary the Mother of Christ. The religious order extended the holiday to include all Mothers and thus it was named Mothering Sunday.

When English colonists settled in America, they discontinued the tradition of Mothering Sunday. However, in 1872 Julia Ward Howe organised a day for Mothers; dedicated to peace – this was a landmark in the history of Mother’s Day.

In 1907, Anna M.Jarvis, a Philadelphian schoolteacher, began a movement to organise and set up a national Mother’s day in honour of her Mother. She petitioned the help of legislators and prominent businessmen to create a special day honouring Mothers everywhere.

The first observed Mother’s Day celebration was a church service in honour of Anna’s Mother. During the celebration Anna handed out white incarnations, her mother’s favourite flowers, in representation of sweetness, purity and patience. The hard work paid off as in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday of May as a national holiday in honour of Mothers.

From this, Mother’s day slowly became very popular and flourished not only in the states, but all over the world. Different countries celebrate Mother’s Day on different days of the year, but some other countries that celebrate with us are: our west side neighbors (Australia), Denmark, Finland, Italy, Turkey and Belgium.
